The Father's Day weekend reading list!

Dad, Father, Tie, Father'S DayAnother weekend is here, and a very special one too - it's the Father's Day weekend! Father's Day is celebrated as a recognition of the contribution fathers make to our lives. Many times this is a silent contribution, while other times, it is overtly noticeable.

Just as in life, in literature too, fathers have made a special place for themselves, with many noted books telling us stories of exceptional fathers. In honour of all the fathers, this Father's day, we at FindMyRead, present you a collection of books as your recommended weekend reading, where it is the Fathers that take center-stage!

1)
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Genre: Classics, Historical Fiction, General Fiction

Admit it, everyone loves a Dad like Mr. Bennet from Pride and Prejudice! Wit, sarcasm and sense of humour is a deadly combination that this patriarch possesses and the best part? He is exceptionally approving and extremely fond of Elizabeth, the protagonist of the book. For Elizabeth, who is everything her mother wants a daughter not to be, her father is the one person, who really and completely understands her. Although the book is a classic, we are sure, there are many daughters who can identify with Elizabeth, and of course, Mr. Bennet!

2) )
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Genre: Classics, Literary Fiction,

When it comes to fathers, who can forget the even-handed, caring, loving, brave and moral Atticus Finch? Today, parenting is all about adopting a liberal and modern approach, but this father adopted a unique parenting style long before the concept became popular. No other father speaks about not having prejudices against those less fortunate than us, the way this father does. The book is a classic and a must-read in its own right, but today, we recommend it as one of your go-to books on strong and impressive father figures.

3)
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

Genre: Young Adult, General Fiction, Drama

Well, technically, Hans Huberman from The Book Thief is the foster father of the protagonist of this book. But it's just that, a technicality. This father is everything a real father is ever supposed to be for a child, and then some! In cahoots with his daughter, possessing a sense of understanding very rarely found in any man, unless, of course, he is a father, this is one father you do not want to miss out on! He makes you smile, he makes you cry, he makes you worry, but most importantly, he teaches you how to make someone feel loved and wanted, especially someone who is not related to you!

4)
The Colour of Law by Mark Giminez

Genre: Legal Thriller, Mystery

This is a book that will feature in many different categories on this blog. However, today, this book is a highlight that establishes a very true and genuine character of Scott Fenney, the father to two girls - one by birth and another not so. While the lawyer in him is busy being the protagonist in the story, it is the little moments of his as a father in the story, that really steal your heart. If you like mysteries and a good character story, this is one book you do not want to miss out on!

5)
Defending Jacob by WIllian Landay

Genre: Legal Thriller, Mystery

"If your son was on trial for murder, what would you do?" says the tagline, and the book sure promises a roller-coaster ride. But what stands out in this book is the father, the one person who loves his son beyond everything and stands to lose everything if the accusation is proved true! Add to this, the fact that he has a few secrets of his own, that can be very damaging to his son's case; and you have a superb mental conflict! From sheer love for his son, to his protective attitude to his helplessness as the story progresses, this is one father (character) that will haunt you for a very long time.

Well, that's our list of fantastic fathers from the world of books. If you have other books on mind that we have missed out, feel free to let us know in the comments section!

So what are you waiting for? Pick up one of these reads and indulge in a mindful of fiction!

And oh, wish you a very Happy Father's Day from all of us here at FindMyRead!
