A steaming cup of coffee and amazing books to read!
Can a weekend start any better?
Plus, this weekend we celebrate Roald Dahl Day (on September 13th) - all the more reason to spend the day reading - don't you agree?
Speaking of Roald Dahl, this brilliant British author has left behind a legacy of some of the best and the most intriguing books of all time!
If you have read any of his work, you know what we are talking about; but if you haven't, we suggest you do not wait any longer!
In fact, even though best known for his work in children's literature; this prolific author has created some exceptional literary gems for adults as well!
So why not today, take a look at some such reads that are written by authors who are best known for children's books but have written great books for adults as well...
1) Someone Like You by Roald Dahl
Genre: Mystery, Short Stories, Horror
Being Roald Dahl Day, let's begin our list with Dahl's first collection of world famous dark and sinister adult stories. This book is loaded with the strange and the unexpected - sordid fantasies, bitter memories, desperate quests and vendettas that are guaranteed to send a shiver down your spine! You find a wife in here who serves a dish that leaves the police bewildered, a harmless bet that turns out to be anything but; and a whole lot more of strange stories! A must read if you are curious to see the other - dark, sinister - side of Dahl.
2) The Red House Mystery by A. A. Milne
Genre: Crime Fiction, Mystery
When we say A. A Milne, we invariably remember the cute, cuddly Winnie-the-Pooh Bear! But it will surprise many to know that Milne wrote a whole different world of reads much before he turned to writing children's books. His earlier writing ranged from contributing humourous pieces to a literary magazine to writing plays to a trio of novels! Among these is The Red House Mystery, a locked-room whodunit. Written in his characteristic style, this is the only mystery novel Milne ever wrote. A must read if you have loved Winnie-the-Pooh as a child (who hasn't!) and if you love reading mysteries. And oh, a great read for Christie fans too!
3) Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne
Genre: Adventure Fiction
You are wondering why this book is included in this list? Well, we did promise you books written for adults, didn't we? Verne's adventure novels have always been great reads, although, poor early English translations ended up wrongly characterizing them as juvenile fiction. So here we bring you, the fastidious Phileas Fogg, who makes a rash bet at his club: to circumnavigate the planet in eighty days! With his honour on the line, will Fogg win his bet? Pick up the book to find out! A must read for adventure enthusiasts and everyone looking for a good, engaging read.
4)Malgudi Days by R. K. Narayan
Genre: Short Stories, General Fiction
R. K. Narayan is one of the prolific writers of India who has regaled readers of all ages for generations! He gave us the imaginary city of Malgudi and the unforgettable characters that taught us the true meaning of life. You will find the village mailman here who teaches us the value of humanity in face of tragedy; you will find an honest account of inadvertent courage shown by Swami, a 9-year old; and many such witty and touching stories that are true to the essence of India. A must read for all ages that teaches us to appreciate life in all its glory!
5) Night Train to Deoli and Other Stories by Ruskin Bond
Genre: General Fiction
And, at the end of our list this week is Ruskin Bond's Night Train to Deoli and Other Stories. An author who touches your heart with his magical writing about life in small town India, Bond is another children's writer who is best known for Room on the Roof, the story of a sixteen year-old orphaned Anglo-Indian boy living in Dehradun. In Night Train...though, Bond enchants his adult readers with splendid stories of accomplishment, love, loss, pain and struggle, set in the hills and mountains of North India. A must read if everyday life fascinates you!
And that rounds up this week's weekend reading list for all ages, by authors of predominantly children's books. We hope you enjoy these reads as much as we have enjoyed putting together this list for you.
Do you have a special book you like, by the author of your favourite childhood book? We would love to know!
Until then, happy reading!
